The Modern Combat Series has been very successful ever since it launched in 2009 with Modern Combat: Sandstorm. Most of the competitive players in the mobile community either played one of the games or familiar with the series. There is no question how big of a role Gameloft played in paving the way for competitive first person shooters.
In September of 2017, Gameloft released their latest game in the series, Modern Combat Versus. It is slightly unconventional when compared to previous titles since it has a more futuristic approach, nevertheless, extremely competitive and entertaining. The company has also introduced new eSports features such as Clans and Live Tournaments. So we do see them working hard on developing the competitive scene for this game.
However, there is an important question that needs to be asked at this point, ”Why is Gameloft still trying to keep Modern Combat 5: Blackout alive rather than focus on Modern Combat Versus?” Modern Combat 5 was released in July of 2014 and a vast number of the original players of this game have left it for an alternative title or are now playing Modern Combat Versus.
A lot of resources is still being spent on Modern Combat 5 in terms of eSports & we are not against it being updated if it has an audience that’s still enjoying it. Yet, with the focus still being aimed at Modern Combat 5’s eSports future, some may argue that less focus would go into Modern Combat Versus since many players would still be engaged in Modern Combat 5.
To conclude, a company is more likely to invest in a game that has a significant number of players. If Modern Combat 5 still steals some spotlight from Modern Combat Versus then that would be problematic. If the latest game in the series is not focused on enough then original Modern Combat fans won’t put time and energy into it and we know that many have already abandoned Modern Combat 5. With MC5 entering its 4th year, we simply ask if it is time for Gameloft to move on and focus more on Modern Combat Versus. From our experience, we know that Gameloft is very capable in innovating the future of competitive first person shooters and perhaps the time to focus on their main FPS title is now.
